Play My Way System is Set to Make its Debut in Casinos

After planning for months, Massachusetts is fully prepared to launch the limiting bet system called Play My Way system in the province. If this is implemented, Massachusetts would be the first state in the whole of United States to do so. Although some pushbacks came from the gambling industry, the state officials saw if off.

Marlene Warner, Executive Director, Massachusetts Gambling Commission said that the organisation is trying to save casual punters from becoming addictive. In no way the mission is to chase the gambling addict. Massachusetts gambling commission is working with the State Gambling Commission on this. Warner in a latest statement mentioned that the tool is designed for prevention and not eradication. The organisation wants punters to gamble for fun purposes without getting into any financial trouble and putting their families at risk.

The new Play My Way system has already been installed in Plainridge Park and one single casino in Massachusetts. It is expected that the new limit play will go live in close to 1250 casinos across the city within a very few days. If the system works, the gambling commission can implement this in two different casinos namely Springfield one and Boston-area.

Mashpee Wampanoag tribe which is accredited by the state officials is building a new casino cum Resort in the sovereign land of Taunton. The officials from the new casino mentioned that they are also reviewing the play my way principle for their casino but yet to take any stance on it. The company has not committed to the officials to employ the Play My Way system during its launch sometime in the year 2017.

Many authorities including the American Gaming Association and Massachusetts casino Operators protested against the play my way norms initially. They argued that many countries including Canada, Australia, Sweden and Norway have tried this practice, but no fruitful results have come out from such endeavours.

Later the American Gaming Commission changed its stunts and said that after a productive conversation, the AGC is certain that the new norms would be able to help a lot of punters who are in need of it. Christopher Moyer, the spokesperson for the American Gaming Association stated that a little segment of the whole gambling community might be able to get help from this kind of initiative. He also added that this tool will go a long way in making sure that players stick to responsible gambling norms.

The Play My Way system is not mandatory and therefore casinos have little threat from it. A player can easily go against it and opt for a slot such the Tiki Island slot. Most casinos will implement this in their reward program. If a player nears to their betting limit, they will start receiving notifications about their limit. If a player crosses his limit, he will automatically be logged out of the game. The game can only be restarted if the player chooses to put on some money and start the play all over again.

While the initial responses from the operators are favourable, it remains to be seen how punters react to this going forward.

Netherlands Government to not Interfere With Curaçao Online Casinos

The government of the Netherlands prefers to stay out of the issue of regulating online casinos operating from Curaçao. Netherlands Minister of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Ronald Plasterk said that the managing of the gambling industry based in Curaçao and St. Maarten is purely an autonomous issue of the countries in question, even if there have been found to be many illegalities in how the industry is run. In fact, Plasterk went on to say that he would not comment on the actions of individual companies and people.

The question of whether the Netherlands government would take action against gambling sites from Curaçao involved with illegal activities was raised by two members of the Netherlands parliament, Socialist Party MP Ronald van Raak and VVD member Andre Bosman. They pointed out that the gambling industry in Curaçao was unregulated and operated without any supervision. The two ministers also share the opinion that Dutch national telecom company UTS is involved with these illegal activities.

The ministers also asked for an investigation into the activities of the accountancy firm KPMG in this context. There were reports in the media that KPMG was involved in checking the finances of Francesco Corallo, an influential casino owner in St. Maarten. However, KPMG Dutch Caribbean released a statement at that time denying any involvement with Francesco Corallo.

The Ministry of Security and Justice in the Hague is indeed concerned about Curaçao based companies operating in the Dutch market. However, Plasterk did not indicate whether the Ministry would supervise the operation of these casinos.

UTS weighed in on the issue by releasing a press statement that the two MPs had a double agenda in making accusations against it. The company was also disturbed that its reputation had been affected. In fact, the telecom called upon local MPs in Curaçao to discuss the issue with the Dutch government.

Plasterk went on to explain that any possible illegalities had to be looked into by the Public Prosecutor’s Offices in Curaçao and St. Maarten. The Minister of Justice of that country would have the responsibility of taking the issue further. However, he did say that the Netherlands government would get into the picture in case of any criminal activities.

The May 2015 agreement between Netherlands and St. Maarten on fighting crime costs the Hague €22.1 million every year. The Prosecutor’s Office in Curaçao has definitely been going against illegal gambling activities, as the successful action against lottery bigwig Robbie dos Santos showed. NAf. 72.5 million was seized during this exercise and dos Santos received a two year prison term.

The issue is unlikely to die down in a hurry since people from the Netherlands are increasingly taking to online gambling as a great form of entertainment. People, in ever increasing numbers, are using their laptops, PCs and smart phones to access online sites to play a variety of games such as Tiki Island slots. If the government doesn’t ensure that people have well regulated sites to visit then they will lose a great deal of money.

PA Lawmakers Disappoint by Rejecting Online Poker Legislation

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives voted 107-81 against a bill that would legalise online gaming, amongst permitted certain other gambling related products, and this has come as a major blow to the online gambling industry that was counting on the bill being passed. The issue was compounded by the fact that the online gambling proposal was linked to the proposal of permitting additional video gaming terminals (VGTs) in the state.

There are indications, however, that the PA lawmakers could revisit the internet gambling issue at a later date. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of clarity on the issue and as of now no date has been fixed for this to happen. This is indeed a major issue for the gambling industry in the state since it is seeking to expand by going on the internet. The land based gambling casinos currently pull in an estimated $3 billion every year. If the state can get to increase these revenues then its tax collections will naturally improve. Pennsylvania has a pension deficit amounting to approximately $50 billion, and increased taxes generated by online gambling can go a long way to fixing the problem.

The proposed internet gambling bill received a spirited defence from many PA lawmakers. It was sponsored by Rep. John Payne who emphasised the point that the taxes generated by online gambling would help the state’s economy. Rep. George Dunbar also pointed out that another purpose of legalising the industry was to regulate it better so that customers could get sufficient protection whenever they gambled on the internet. Payne added to this point saying that proper regulation would ensure that vulnerable people such as children and compulsive gamblers would get protection.

At present, many Americans visit online gambling sites run from offshore locations because there aren’t too many legal options available. As a matter of fact, they can easily visit these sites without even leaving the comfort of their homes and play a variety of games such as poker and slots. Games such as Tiki Island slot are a big draw at these casinos because of their sophisticated graphics and the lure of big prizes.

The online gambling black market serving United States customers is worth many billions of dollars. It is a well-established business and many sites even accept deposits via credit cards. The problem with gambling on these sites is that quite a few of them have links to crime gangs. In fact, many sites have fixed their games to give hardly any wins at all. Others exist only to steal customers’ financial and personal data.

Among the PA lawmakers, Payne has been working very hard to push his gambling bill through the houses of legislature. He has conducted 47 different hearings and meetings on this subject over the past eighteen months with the objective of providing lawmakers with enough information to enable them to make informed decisions. He remains unfazed by the reverse he has just experienced and is committed to doing more work to have the online gambling bill turned into law.

Nevada Considers Expanding Online Gambling

Lawmakers in Nevada have joined hands with segments of the online gambling industry in the state to seek ways to expand the gambling products currently offered here. Online gambling is banned throughout the United States with the exception of Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware where it is available in restricted forms. As of now, online casinos based out of Nevada offer only poker, but there are indications this state might follow the lead of the other two by permitting casinos to offer different types of casino games. Online gamblers prefer to play games such as slots, with Tiki Island slots being one of the most popular ones.

Governments earn a lot of money from gambling operations, and it is in their best interests to regulate this industry properly. There have been indications that Nevada would link its iGaming operations with those of the other two states, but this has not materialized so far. However, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has raised the subject of working out a liquidity-sharing agreement with New Jersey. If this deal could materialize then both states would benefit from increased tax revenues. There will also be many benefits to players in the form of increased choices and better service.

It is no small task to link the gaming operations of two or more jurisdictions. In fact, there are political and technical reasons for this. Operators will have to locate their servers in suitable places and will also have to determine how the cash generated from the operations will be split between the partner jurisdictions. The latter topic is a problematic one because of the volumes of money involved and it will involve detailed negotiations between the parties concerned. Not only will the states have to consent to a common rake structure but they should also choose the right revenue share option.

The United States tends to have a hostile political environment towards online gambling. Vested interests such as Nevada gambling billionaire Sheldon Adelson have used their considerable political might to prevent the legalization of the online gambling business. In fact, Adelson has a lot of influence over New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and this might derail any discussions on liquidity-sharing agreements. Adelson’s hand can be seen behind many reverses suffered by the industry in the United States, including the troubles faced by PokerStars in New Jersey.

It seems very likely that Nevada will continue to push for changes to its gambling law in order to be able to offer a wide range of gambling products. More than 80% of New Jersey’s gaming revenues come from online casino games and not just poker. It is clear to see that politicians in Nevada have their eyes on the money they could potentially earn by increasing the range of games they offer. Interestingly, the increase in internet based gambling hasn’t eaten into the revenues of land based casinos. If at all, it has cut into the illegal market. It will be interesting to see whether lawmakers in Nevada can take the right decision in this matter.

HB 649-The Proposed Online Gambling Bill by Pennsylvania

With online gambling activities flourishing in its border states like New Jersey, it was inevitable that online gambling activities were legalized in Pennsylvania. Reading Eagle has now broken the news that Senator John Penn has introduced a bill in the senate to legalise online betting. The online betting bill is all set to be taken up for debate in the House of Representatives in June. The proposed bill- HB 649 – has now turned out to be the moot point of discussion in many circles, particularly amongst groups who are ardent supporters of online gambling activities.

The Online Gambling Bill

Close on the heels of successful passing of the budget for the financial year 2015-16 without any amendments by the Governor, Tom Wolf, in spite of a budgetary deficit to the tune of one billion dollars, the talk now is about HB 649. Senator John Penn however has focussed his bill not to shore up the income of the state with additional revenue through his bill. The main plank of Penn is to safeguard the vulnerable sections of the state from the evils of illegal online gambling activities, which is in slowly but steadily spreading its tentacles across the state. As not only the obsessive gamblers but also the children who are the prime targets of the illegal betting operators, Penn strongly feels that it is the opportune time to introduce the bill and save those who are otherwise likely to succumb to the illegal gambling syndicate.

The Role of Existing Players

HB 649 envisages the involvement of existing land based casinos in online activities. But for Sheldon Adelson, one of the prominent existing casinos in Pennsylvania, the other eleven casinos are likely to opt for the chance to offer online gambling games like Tiki Island Slot games. And as per the bill envisaged by John Penn, who incidentally has categorically has said that he does not intend to run for another term, at the end of the present tenure, a tax rate of 14% is to be levied on the online games. It is estimated that this revenue could offset the budgetary losses by at least 5 million dollars.

Wishes of the Majority

The bill to legalise online betting activities, which has come before the end of the term of the present House of Representatives has made the people of the state anxious and worried. With everyone being aware of the vociferous support to the bill by Penn and his decision not to run for another term, the big time fans of games like Tiki Island Slot are hoping that the bill HB 649 is successfully passed in the senate before the term of office of John Penn comes to an end. Reading Eagle in fact had conducted a poll to gauge the support of the people for the bill on online gambling in Pennsylvania and the result is overwhelming in favour of making online gambling a legal activity, with more than 60% of those who were questioned supporting the bill.

New Jersey Breaks Online Gambling Record

PokerStars has virtually taken the online casino market in New Jersey by storm, as the introduction of the casino site in late March has propelled the casino revenue of the state by about 33% breaking online gambling record. New Jersey, which happens to be one of the first states to permit online casinos has been recording impressive revenue collection from online casino games like Tiki Island slot. But in spite of the big interest shown by the local residents in the internet casino games, it looked as though the growth here had hit a plateau. The graph of revenue collection for the last couple of years indicated that the peak has been attained.

The Launch of PokerStars

Around the fag end of March 2016, PokerStars made its entry in New Jersey, courtesy, Resorts Casino. A market which looked like to have already peaked, woke-up with a renewed vigour, as the residents took a big fancy for PokerStars. It was not just the case of playing some entertaining online casino games, but winning that has made the difference. Since the winning percentage in PokerStars was much higher than most other games being offered at New Jersey, players started to make a beeline for the site, resulting in an increase in revenue for the state. This has in turn made the casino growth graph to surge northwards, after a period of lull.

The Tell-tale Figures

Since being launched in late March 2016, PokerStars has sustained a interest among the public of New Jersey, which could be clearly be seen in the figures provided by the gaming regulators of the state. Impressive gain of was recorded in casino revenue of the state in March 2016, the month when Pokerstars was introduced. In absolute terms, the revenue earned was $2,461,064 in March 2016, whereas the figures for the corresponding period in 2015 were $2,227,629, which shows that a 10% increase in revenue has been achieved. Yet another important piece of statistics brought out is that while casino wins in New Jersey from all other casino games like Tiki Island Slot was $15,507,459 in March 2016, it was only $13,165,623 in March 2015.

An Unparalleled Growth

Without any momentum shift, the revenue collection in the state in April too recorded an unprecedented $17 million, which is in fact a surge of 33% over the revenue earned during the same period in 2015. Within the first four months of 2016, a jump in casino wins of about 30% has been recorded thereby winning the confidence of the casino players. With choices now available to play entertaining as well as profitable games like Tiki Island Slot and poker games offered by PokerStars, the internet casino market is perked up to reach newer heights. The casino revenues of some of the leading casinos like Borgata, Golden Nugget, Tropicana, Caesar’s Interactive and Resorts casino have all recorded notable increase in the first quarter of 2016. Resorts casino has been one of the biggest success stories of 2016, thanks to PokerStars.

Sheldon Adelson Ensures that Senate Spending Bill Targets Online Gambling

American gambling mogul Sheldon Adelson, chief executive of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation that owns many properties in the US, Singapore, and Macau including Las Vegas based Venetian and Palazzo casinos, is continuing his sustained campaign to prevent online gambling from being legalised in the United States. The 83 year old billionaire who is listed as one of the top 20 people in the world has long been pulling every string possible to ensure that the immensely popular internet gambling industry doesn’t get a toe hold in the United States.

There are growing calls to make online gambling legal in the United States since this industry is well-regulated and flourishing in many different countries. As a matter of fact, many Americans opt to play poker, casino games, and slots at online casinos operating from different jurisdictions outside the country. Governments of various states in the US have a problem with their residents gambling on poker sites or playing games like Tiki Island slot on unregulated sites since this is an illegal activity. Furthermore, state governments are losing out on taxes from these activities. While the federal government has banned internet gambling in all but a few states, some states are trying to legalize it to various extents.

Adelson’s latest blow against the online gambling industry came when he managed to get Senator Lindsey Graham (R) from South Carolina to add anti-gambling flavour to a bill placed before the Senate Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Bill (S.2837) language that sets it firmly against internet based gambling. In fact, the line in the bill resembles the ill fated Restoration of America’s Wire Act (RAWA) that would have ensured that internet gambling became illegal throughout the US. Interestingly, Adelson was one of the driving forces behind RAWA.

The purpose of including the line against online betting is to highlight the fact that the existing Wire Act is set firmly against legalizing it. The position taken is that since the Wire Act hasn’t been amended or repealed as of now, online gambling should be illegal throughout the country irrespective of laws passed by individual states to legalize it wholly or in parts. Graham and Adelson maintain that the legality of internet betting in the US should be decided by the judicial system and not the individual governments of the states.

Adelson and Graham have an association that goes back a long time and the Senator’s anti-gambling stance has a lot to do with the support he receives from the billionaire. In fact, Adelson was one of the main supporters for Graham’s unsuccessful bid for the White House.

S.2837 is unlikely to make it past the House Appropriations Committee in its current form. Rep. John Culbertson might get the line removed from the bill before it is sent to the President of the United States to be signed into law. While Culbertson hasn’t made any statements regarding this issue, it seems very unlikely that any law will be passed that bans internet gambling throughout the country.

The Announcement of William Hill to Leave Canadian Online Gambling Market

Perhaps, the Canadian online gambling market has reaped unending benefits of the services of offshore betting operators. However, things are changing now, as many international operators are withdrawing their services from Canada. They are planning to leave the Canadian jurisdiction and will not accept players from Canada in the coming days.

Announcement by William Hill

The iconic British Book, William Hill will be the first operator in 2016 to withdraw its gambling services from the country. According to media reports and announcement by William Hill, players in British Columbia will not be able to place any bet from 10TH May 2016. However, they will be allowed to withdraw their balance left in the accounts at any point of time. To express its concern towards the players, the casino recently sent an email to all its customers mentioning that it is leaving the Canadian jurisdiction for a better future.

The casino apologized to all the players for the inconvenience caused but it assures that the decision has been taken on a short notice and due to regulatory reasons. The William Hill casino club expressed that the regulatory reasons are beyond its control and it will have to leave the country.

The Legality of Online Gambling in Canada

While talking about the legal status of online gambling in Canada, the country allows only individual provincial lottery corporations. Nonetheless, some sources reveal that the law also allows activities of the other internationally licensed operators until they have located their servers outside Canada. In the year 2011, Paddy Power became the first global company to terminate its services in Canada. However, it continued to offer B2B services to the provincial lottery corporations. In addition to this, Ladbrokes, a British based online gaming operator withdrew its services from the Canadian market two years back. The operator did not justify its action with a concrete reason.

Moreover, in the year 2015, Betfair, the popular sports betting operator declared that it would restrict the punters from Canada to use its gaming products including fixed odds bets and exchange bets. In fact, Toronto Ontario Stock exchange has recently mentioned the name of NYX Gaming Group, the online gambling technology firm that confirmed the procurement of OpenBet, its rival company. With this, it gets clear that not only William Hill but also other casino operators are also moving out from the Canadian online gambling market.

Even after the major casino operators have withdrawn their services from Canada, Canadian punters can still enjoy their favorite casino games at the available casino sites. Whether you wish to play a table game or the very popular 5- reel game, Tiki Island, you can enjoy it all after signing up at the casinos still operating in Canada. You can just do a little research about the current Canadian casinos and become a member of it. It would be better to sign up at a casino offering welcome bonus, free spins and great jackpot opportunities. No doubt, the passion and interest of the Canadian punters is not going to be any less in any situation.

The Online Gambling Scenario Quite Optimistic in New Jersey 2016 Onwards

2016 Q1 figures of New Jersey based online casinos declared by Division of Gaming Enforcement, New Jersey reveals an increase in earnings for licensed internet based casinos. In fact, the rise in revenue collection has been to the extent of 28% over the corresponding period in 2015. With parameters for growth showing healthy signs, further increase in revenue over the rest of the year is imminent.

The Impact of Online Casinos

While the revenue of New Jersey increased from $35.1 million to $44.9 million dollars during this period, the growth in the revenue from online casinos alone have contributed to about 28%. Roger Gros, an online gambling publisher has concluded that based on this figures, undoubtedly, the future of New Jersey economics is moving in the right direction. Gros has observed that while it took a couple of years for the New Jersey residents to come to terms with the online gaming structure, presently they have taken a big liking to the games and are now fully conversant with the products and services offered by the online casino providers. One important factor for the residents to fully accept these games is that the operators have been proactive in diagnosing and rectifying the irritants like payment windows. All other procedural and technological issues which have surfaced in the online casino games in New Jersey have also been assiduously attended to by the casino operators to instill the confidence of the online casino players.

Unique New Jersey Model

When the New Jersey administration decided to license the online casinos, legislation was drafted to ensure that online games could be provided only by the existing brick and mortar casinos. With door open for online games in New Jersey for the land based casinos, these casinos in turn looked around for the best possible partnerships with the leading software providers. Such a move has had several benefits for the both the stakeholders. For the land based casinos which were steadily sinking in revenue collection this was a great opportunity for revival. The revenue earned through their online operations helped them in sustaining their offline facilities. Thus the introduction of online games through the brick and mortar casinos has prevented retrenchment of employees, which had the potential of escalating the rapid fall of economy.

Model Waiting to be Copied

The success enjoyed by the New Jersey model has evinced keen interest from other states as well, now. It is just not the monetary success of the model, but its hassle free working is what has attracted attention from other states. The close working of the casino operators and their online software providers has ensured that clients signing-in do not face any glitches in any issue, most importantly in banking transactions. The smooth working of the model is certain to bring cheer to the economy of the state in the rest of the year, as existing players continue to sign-in regularly while new players join the online bandwagon, on hearsay.
